MORE ABOUT Saffie

2024 saw Saffie enjoy history-making success at Meydan as the first woman to ride a winner in Dubai.

This was quickly followed up with additional victories in Doha, Qatar less than 24 hours later! This global rising star is the daughter of former top jump jockey Jamie Osborne and renowned equine artist Katie O’Sullivan.

Effectively born on a horse, Saffie made her racing debut in the Shetland Grand National. Her teenager years were spent eventing and in 2017 the ‘girl child’ – an affectionate nickname by her father – won two silver medals at the European Championship; one as an individual and one for the British team on a pony rescued from a roadside in Tipperary. The following year, the duo returned to scoop double European Gold.

SAffie started race riding at 19

On leaving school Saffie enjoyed a summer with the legendary Aidan O’Brien and a winter with Ciaron Maher in Australia, and started race riding aged 19.

Having been made to ‘work for it’ trainer Harry Fry provided Saffie with her breakthrough moment when winning the 2022 November Handicap and the Chester Cup on a horse called Metier.

Falls and injuries are part and parcel of jump racing, but not necessarily flat racing. However, Saffie has experienced a few and incurred broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken arm; and various leg and knee injuries.

The 2023 season concluded with Saffie narrowly missing out on her 100th winner of the season. Saffie launched the 2024 season in style to attain global recognition as the rising start of flat racing, further cemented with history-making success at Meydan Racecourse as the first woman to ride a winner in Dubai.

The future is vibrant for this female sporting talent whose aim, without hesitation, is to be champion jockey.

“I’m very proud of Saffie’s achievements. Having won a European Gold medal as an event rider, she now cemented her place as one of the top fl at jockeys in the country. A top-class horsewoman, she has an unbelievable work ethic. She is incredibly competitive, driven and just a little bit stubborn. All traits I attribute to her mother!”
